Union Bay Getting Beat Up on All Fronts – Developer’s Gravel/sand Pit, Dumping Treated Sewage in Hart/Washer Creek, and now Logging in the Watershed

Another subject the gong show trustees proved to be useless at addressing. Previous posts when this came up in Jan. 2018 – after Trustee Kaljur brought it up at their first meeting in Nov. 2016, and was repeatedly ignored. https://allthingsunionbay.com/?s=logging+in+the+watershed

Have to give Area A Director Daniel Arbour credit for alerting the landowners to this proposed logging in the watershed. We paid over $5 million for a water treatment plant, and how is it going to handle the effects logging will have on what goes into the lake?

Drone footage of Langley Lake that is from Dec. 2016 and Aug. 2015.

Is Union Bay Improvement District Up To Protecting Our Water From Logging in the Watershed?

These short clips are from the Dec. 14, 2017 UBID meeting when the threat of logging in our watershed was discussed.

Again, these trustees and Admin have no direction or experience and are flailing around thinking we are at the mercy of a logging company.

If they had bothered, they would know Vancouver Island Water Watch was involved in 2013.  Sitting back and waiting for a response to a few letters is not an option.

Letter to our MLA Scott Fraser from June Ross of Vancouver Island Water Watch Coalition dated January 9, 2018.

Logging has been a concern for every Union Bay Board.   Here’s some info from March 2013.  Unsure what happened to the $5,000. grant.

MLA Scott Fraser Acknowledging Receipt of Union Bay Landowners Letters on Logging in Our Watershed

Everyone who wrote letters to Scott Fraser should have received this response.

Hello Mary,

Thank you for writing me in regards to logging on Langley Lake.

I’ve spent my career in politics fighting for clean water, sustainable forests, and habitats for wildlife and for future generations of British Columbians to enjoy.

For years the former government sacrificed the environment for short term economic gains. This government will make sure any logging on private lands follow regulations set out in the Private Managed Forest Land Act and the Drinking Water Protection Act.

I will be meeting with the Union Bay Improvement District to discuss how we protect their drinking water supply. I am also working with the Ministry of Forests, Lands, and Natural Resource Operations on the issue around logging at Langley Lake as well as other private logging operations throughout Vancouver Island.

Thank you again for taking the time to write me in regards to logging on Langley Lake.

Yours truly,

Hon Scott Fraser, MLA

Union Bay Landowners Need to Take Action BEFORE the Logging Planned for August in Our Watershed

This is so important that I wanted to post it again and keep it fresh in the minds of fellow landowners.  No one will be able to live here without clean water and the potential for our water source being contaminated by the planned logging in August of this year must be stopped.

That will only happen if everyone who lives in Union Bay and depends on the water from Langley Lake tells all the levels of government involved and the logging company that we will not allow our water source to be negatively impacted by logging.
