Yesterday, I wrote again to the government about the negative environmental and social impacts of shipbreaking. I have risen in the House of Commons and met with ministers and senior officials frequently and, as I say in this letter, it has been “round and round the mulberry bush”. All the while, by the way, Conservatives have remained silent, not willing to be seen to act against the interests of the big companies that dominate this industry. One community in Courtenay-Alberni, Union Bay, continues to suffer the consequences of unregulated ship dismantling while another, Port Alberni, is reluctant to consider the potential for an environmentally safe industry by reputable businesses because of the absence of federal standards and regulations. This is a fight that I will never abandon, regardless of which party forms government.
