CCOBS take on the latest Ministry Out of Compliance letter. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61565489111834

Concerned Citizens of Baynes Sound

18h

On February 28th, yet another NON COMPLIANCE was issued to Deep Water Recovery (DWR) for polluting Baynes Sound, but nothing is changing. Since April 2022, there have been 16 warnings, yet toxic levels of copper, lead, and zinc continue to be dumped into the ocean.

Shouldn’t ONE warning be enough when it comes to the marine ecosystems?

David Eby when will you finally step up and do something?

How many more violations before the Ministry of Environment and Parks actually stops this?

And what about DFO and ECCC? They have done nothing—no enforcement, no penalties, just watching as toxic effluent continues to poison the marine environment. Fisheries and Oceans CanadaEnvironment and Climate Change Where are YOU!!!!

Warnings? Is that all?! DFO and ECCC are failing in their duty to protect BC’s waters. This isn’t just any area—it’s a critical ecological zone:

🔹 Important Bird Area; IBA BC057

🔹 Key Biological Area; KPA11073

🔹 3 of the 7 Named Ecologically and Biologically Sensitive Areas; EBSA’s on Vancouver Island’s East Coast are in Baynes Sound

Baynes Sound produces over half of BC’s shellfish and one-third of its herring, and this site is located immediately beside a residential community.

Summary of the February 28th Warning:

🔹 Toxic Metals in the Water – Lab results confirm that DWR continues to discharge dangerous levels of copper, lead, and zinc into Baynes Sound, exceeding BC’s Water Quality Guidelines by hundreds to thousands of percent.

🔹 Non-Compliance & Repeat Violations – Despite receiving a Pollution Abatement Order in March 2024, DWR failed to stop illegal discharges, install a proper water treatment system, or comply with mandated environmental monitoring.

🔹 Direct Discharges into Baynes Sound – Reports show runoff from DWR’s facility is contaminating the marine ecosystem, a critical fishing and shellfish farming area.

🔹 DFO & ECCC: Where Are You?! – Neither agency has enforced any action. They continue to allow toxic waste to be dumped into BC waters. No shutdowns. No real penalties. Just more warnings while the destruction continues.

Enough is enough. STOP THIS TRAVESTY! Send an email to your MP, MLA and to the Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Environment and Climate Change! Demand action !
