Concerned Citizens of Baynes Sound
In a recent report by NGO Shipbreaking Platform, alarming statistics reveal that in 2024, 80% of scrapped ships worldwide were dismantled under hazardous conditions, predominantly in South Asia. This includes tragic incidents like the explosion of MT Suvarna Swarajya in Bangladesh, claiming lives due to severe safety negligence.
Despite international regulations, these practices persist, endangering workers and polluting vulnerable coastal ecosystems.
Baynes Sound, Union Bay, Canada, is highlighted in the article for its ongoing struggles with unregulated shipbreaking activities. “Deep Water Recovery (DWR) has been involved in the dismantling of the NOAAS Miller Freeman and NOAAS Surveyor in Baynes Sound. These operations, despite multiple violations flagged by local authorities, continue without sufficient government intervention, threatening the local environment and the community.”
Do we want Canada to be lumped in with the third-world countries that scrap ships under hazardous conditions? No! It’s time for BC, Canada to adopt international shipbreaking regulations and protect our coastlines and ecosystems! We must hold the shipping industry accountable for their environmental impact and ensure that hazardous materials are properly handled.
