We thank the NGO Shipbreaking Platform for their steadfast international advocacy and support in calling out unsafe and hazardous shipbreaking practices in Baynes Sound.

Their latest press release (announced globally) highlights a significant win: the Province of British Columbia has terminated the Crown land lease held by Deep Water Recovery Ltd. (DWR) in Union Bay. This means DWR can no longer use Crown land for storage or transportation of dismantled ship materials, nor the riparian area along the shoreline.

💡 As the NGO Shipbreaking Platform states, “This is a major step forward for environmental protection and community safety — achieved through years of persistence by Union Bay residents, the K’ómoks First Nation, environmental groups”, and allies like the NGO Shipbreaking Platform.

But let’s be clear: shipbreaking at Union Bay has not yet stopped. Hazardous dismantling continues, and derelict vessels and industrial debris remain. Cleanup, oversight, and stronger laws are still urgently needed.

Canada — with the longest coastline in the world and an estimated 900 large vessels in BC alone needing safe dismantling — must finally adopt international ship recycling regulations. Until then, our coasts remain at risk. The world is watching Canada, step up and protect the coastline!
