Send Feedback on Canada’s plan for 2026 Herring Management in B.C.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is accepting comments on the 2025/2026 Draft Integrated Fisheries Management Plan (IFMP) for Pacific herring until November 17, 2025.
The most effective way to help Pacific herring is to write to your fisheries representatives right now when they are actively asking for public feedback and tell them that you do not support the commercial gillnet and seine fishery and want them to support an ecosystem approach to fisheries management of herring in British Columbia.
We need to allow Pacific herring populations to come back to sustainable levels. It’s time for Fisheries and Oceans Canada to protect this #BIGLittleFish for generations to come.
Below is a pre-written message which will automatically be sent to the consultation email address and Canada’s Fisheries Minister. You’re welcome to send the letter as is or edit it to include a personalized message.

Three days left to protect Pacific herring!
The federal government is inviting public input on next year’s herring harvest in B.C. – submissions close November 17th. So far, over 350 Canadians have shared their voice, thank you!
Pacific herring are the foundation of our coastal food web, but commercial kill fisheries, including the herring roe fishery, catch females before they can spawn, preventing thousands of future eggs and threatening marine life that depends on them.
We’re calling on the government to:
Suspend commercial herring fishing in the Strait of Georgia until populations recover, except for Indigenous Food, Social, and Ceremonial (FSC) fisheries.
Create a science- and Indigenous-led recovery plan before any harvest resumes.
Manage migratory and resident populations separately to protect genetic and ecological diversity.
You can submit feedback by email, using our pre-addressed letter here:

Together, we can ensure Pacific herring thrive for generations to come.
